Anyone who knows me hata kidogo (even a little!) can tell you I love Linux. While it certainly is true, I’m stoked about open-source software in general, be it GNU/Linux, Android, PHP, Apache, git etc. Because I believe passion is contagious, I’ve started a new blog with the specific purpose of documenting and sharing that passion.

In Kenyan Swahili mjanja means “hustler”… someone who knows their way around town, someone who knows what they want and how to get it. I want my passion for open-source technology to resonate with a new generation of Kenyans. Kenyans who want to be technology wajanja (hustlers). Kenyans who want to take their devices back from Apple, HTC, Samsung, HP et al who would tell them what they can and can’t do with them.

For now, the tag line of Mjanja Tech is “chini ya maji, just for the lulz.” Chini ya maji means “under the water,” a reference to being underground, behind the scenes, etc. Just for the lulz is a reference to the recent escapades of rogue computer security specialists/vigilantes/hackers LulzSec, who claimed they were hacking the FBI, CIA, Sony, and others “just for the lulz” (laughs).

While I don’t plan to blog about anything malicious, I understand their sentiment about doing something for reasons other than profit. Information wants to be free, so I’m doing my part to make that happen. Tell your friends and add a bookmark now!
